I still get updates on one website that does memorial guest books. This one was set up for an actor who I used to watch on a soap opera. I've learned a lot about the guy.
The administrator has disabled public write access.

I think as long as the guestbook doesn't look out dated and tacky. They are a fine way for people to greet the website and make them feel they have a voice on your website.
